It's hard work, but oh so worth it!
Use it or Lose it.
The human body is a stimulus-response mechanism. It will only give you what you ask of it and unless you purposely change things up, nothing more.
Doing the same menu repetitiously for months without change conditions your mind and body only to that specific menu demand. As time passes neuromuscular adaptation occurs. Your body only gives you enough to maintain the status quo. At best you are maintaining a pain free status.
That's the good news is. How awesome is that? BUT are you growing, living an active life and challenging yourself?
Your Corrective Exercise Menus NEED to Change
Sure you're no longer in pain. If your menu doesn't change periodically, you run the risk of not giving your body the stimulus and demand it requires to continue growing and adapting to your ever changing life demands.
BE WARNED! If you are in a maintenance menu and haven't changed things up in awhile there's a high likelihood you won't stick with it. It's human nature.
If you've had a history of chronic pain, why take the risk? So how can you tell if it's time to change up your e-cise menu?
5 Signs It's Time For a New Corrective Exercise Menu
When you started, your menu was rejuvenating, and interesting. There was so much to learn about the pain-posture connection. Perhaps you now find yourself going through the motions without "connecting" to your body and how it responds to the e-cises. Boredom in a menu leaves places you at risk of undervalueing your efforts or quitting altogether. Postural therapy is movement medicine. It's preventative health care. If you're bored, do something to re-ignite the flame.
You're experiencing new or old symptomatic pain symptoms. STOP! Call your PAS. It's not the e-cises that are the problem, but the body going into the e-cise. Much can get lost in translation. I've seen it happen many times. You learn your corrective exercise menu successfully in the studio and experiences pain relief with your PAS along side to coach and guide you. Now you're home and "wham", not the same experience at all. It's okay. You might need a menu modification, coaching or guided instruction in a safe environment to practice and build your confidence. No matter what, if you feel pain, LISTEN TO YOUR BODY and reach out.
You haven't had an "awakening", "a-ha" moment OR noticed an improved change in your physical/emotional well-being than you did prior to starting the menu. Congratulations! You've hit a plateau in your menu. Your body has adapted to the demand of the menu and is telling you it's time for more! A new e-cise menu will take you out of your comfort zone. It will add variety and challenge you both mentally and physically while continuing to promote getting straight, strengthening, and leaving your body balanced.
Your menu feels like an obligation or chore. If you've found yourself putting off your menu it can quickly turn from "I'll do it later", to "I'll do it tomorrow", to "why bother anymore". Call your PAS you to get a new menu and more SMART goal progressions to give you the boost you need.
5. No Pain
You no longer have old symptomatic pain. It's natural to think you're just fine. Lack of pain can lull you into a false impression that you no longer have to maintain a corrective exercise menu practice.
I'm NOT saying you'll have to do a corrective menu everyday for the rest of your life. However, a maintenance menu practice in addition to your regularly scheduled fitness workouts is ideal. If I've ever seen clients run into problems, it happens here. They diligently implement a corrective exercise menu, overcome their pain and mobility limitations, only to stop as the memory of the pain fades. Without a maintenance plan put into place and periodically changed up, you run the risk of becoming imbalanced once again. It's only a matter of time until imbalances put you at risk of injury and/or old symptomatic pain once again. All the more reason to periodically continue to invest in your health and get a "tune-up/check-up" menu from your PAS.
