The other day I posted a poll on our Facebook Page which asked,
So what do you think? Do you believe that corrective exercise and posture alignment therapy are only good for people who are in chronic muscle and joint pain?
In my professional and personal opinion, one of the biggest fallacies about posture alignment therapy and corrective exercise is precisely that, that they are solely for people in chronic muscle and joint pain. That idea couldn't be more further from the truth.
It is for EVERYONE of every age, stage and ability.
Everyone can reap the multiple benefits of posture alignment therapy way before they get into a chronic pain situation! It is a fallacy to think that if you don't have chronic musculo-skeletal pain then you are in postural balance and good health. Your body is indeed giving you signals! The bigger question is, "Have you been listening?"
That is why I highly encourage people to get into a good postural therapy practice as early as possible because the body does talk and tell you things about your position and condition.
Your Body Talks. Are You Missing the Signals?
Along your path of life (and regardless of your current activity level) have you experienced one or all of the following:
- Limited range of motion
- Little stabs of pain in the low back or joints with basic movements
- Feeling something "go" when you reach down or up or "snaps" in your shoulder, neck or head?
- Hesitation to do particular activities or motions because you know you will feel it the next day
- Recurring "itis" issues (plantar fasciitis, achilles tendonitis, golfer's/tennis elbow?)
- believe in the "no pain, no gain" philosophy (ie) working through strain or "not okay feeling" to accomplish a workout
Unfortunately, when it come to your body, most miss or simply ignore/dismiss the signals until pain or injury actually sets it.
Choosing to dismiss signals by ignoring it or working through it rather than taking the time to STOP, listen and address the problem, sets you up for an episodic incidence. It's kind of like driving with a tire that is under-inflated. If you don't stop the car to re-balance the tires and alignment of the car, you are stressing the whole frame.
The car underperforms at speed, around twists and turns. It's harder to control. If left for too long, you can expect a serious amount of damage that will cost you time and money. Your body is no different.
Had you simply stopped to inflate the tire, the performance would have improved and the cost eliminated. What's the big idea?
You wouldn't drive with an under-inflated tire, so why would you do the same kind of thing to your body? You may have simply chalked some of your beliefs to fallacies as:
- I'm just getting old
- The doctor said I have x, y, z and I just have to learn to live with it
- I was born this way
- I have my mothers feet, back (you get the idea)
Unfortunately, these beliefs that you hold are meant to be agents of change! Twinges and limited range of motion are just some of your body's signals that your body is out of balance! Sadly, this is how we get set up for the chronic pain cycle, when we ignore the signals.
It simply goes like this "that movement/activity didn't feel good, so I better not do it again" and so begins the movement limitation and restrictions of what kind of activites we do with our lives.
If you are fortunate enough to:
- not be in pain
- are reading this blog
- willing to learn from this content because one of our points perfectly described you
- CONGRATULATIONS! You are listening to your body and willing to take proactive steps to address the signals your body has been giving you. If left ignored is just a "symptom waiting to happen".
So to recap, Is Posture Alignment Therapy and Corrective Exercise only for People in Chronic Pain? Absolutely NOT! It for EVERYONE at ANY STAGE OF LIFE!
Who Can Benefit from Corrective Exercise?
In fact, the earlier you put a corrective exercise practice into your lifestyle, the better! I recommend Corrective Exercise programming to anyone who:
- wanting to avoid joint replacement surgery
- has repetitive pain and strain which affects their ability to do the activities they love (running, working out, CrossFit, pilates, yoga, gardening)
- is starting to specialize in only one sport year round
- is a competitive athlete wanting to improve their durability and minimize injury
- is stuck in the chronic pain cycle and has tried massage, chiropractic, and other techniques to manage discomfort but the pains come back and they have to repeatedly go in for treatments
- wants to increase their joint range of motion and ability to do activities of daily living
- wants to improve their posture and present themselves in job interviews and life in general
- has to sit for long periods of time and needs to un-do the damage
- engages in repetitive tasks on a daily basis (iPad, Smart Phone, "iPosture" head forward movements, reading, knitting or anything that causes us to pull the head forward for long periods of time)
