I found this quote on a Facebook page I enjoy called Strength for Life (as the power of social media goes, they were sharing a blog post called The Weekly Sticky, where the original commentary and quote was sourced)
"The wisdom of the body is responsible for 90% of the hope of patients to recover. The body has a super wisdom that is in favor of life, rather than death. This is the pwoer that we depend on for life. All doctors are responsible for letting their patients know of this great force working within them" - Dr. Richard Cabot, Harvard Medical School
Of course I think it's awesome and it's a belief I personally hold as true when working with my clients, but I'd really love to know what your thoughts are!
The quote completely reflects what I do as a Corrective Exercise Specialist, but I also wanted to expand upon it from my professional experience and personal view point. One of my favorite quotes that I've come to adopt is from Pain Free author Pete Egoscue. He said,
"You know more about your health that anyone in the whole world."
~ Pete Egoscue
Did you know that the Harvard Medical School quote was written in the late 1800's? How sad that with the advancement of medicine, that somehow that philosophy of hope and the body's ability to heal has been lost in today's westernized medical model. Perhaps not all, but unfortunately, the majority of my clients have not had that kind of empowering experience.
When it comes to chronic musculoskeletal pain, the traditional western approach goes something like this: rest, immobilize, medicate, manipulate, and surgery as (hopefully) the last option. You may temporarily feel better. But a symptom focused approach guarantees that it's only a matter of time until the pain reappears or a new one pops up.
Because of the cyclical and symptom focus, the body is treated as if it's fragile, easily broken, and worse, that there's nothing you can possible do on your own to heal.
Remember, a diagnosis is only information. It does not foretell the future outcome.
Here at Pain Free Posture MN we believe that the body has an innate ability to heal itself. Treatment of pain symptoms without understanding the cause, merely shuts off the human body’s wisdom. We treat the body as a unit, identify the root cause of the problem and address you as a whole. As a result, we don't just isolate and focus on the pain, we address why it occured and correct the original source of the dysfunction so it does not re-occur. We break the chronic pain cycle.
Corrective exercise programming is based on the belief that aside from traumatic injury and rare genetic abnormalities, all human beings are all born with the same basic "blue-print" design. When the body adheres to The 8 Laws of Physcial Health, it is able to maintain good function and pain free status throughout our natural lifespan. Conversely, the more laws we violate, the greater the pain and the faster we age and die.
I get to watch miracles happen everyday, yet I play only a small role. Yes, I know how to analyze the body for postural compensations and dysfunctions, and how to apply the right corrective exercises (providing the proper stimulus and demand) to help the body return back to it's pain-free, blue-print design and function. BUT.... it comes down to the client. YOU are ultimately responsible for your own self-care and healing.
“Until you recognize the need, the absolute requirement for taking responsibility, you will not succeed. Once you do accept the responsibility, however, the Egoscue Method never fails.
Never. No drugs, no surgery, no machines, no miracles. Just You. A normal person, doing normal things.”
~ Pete Egoscue
Here at Pain Free Posture MN we practice a new paradigm of healthcare. We focus attention on you the client as a whole in mind, body and spirit and treat you as more than just your symptom (your pain).
I believe in the fundamental truth that we're "in this together." We work to eliminate confusion, chatter and varying approaches to empower you to allow your body to heal. Together with you leading, we create a pathway to return to a pain free life and living. What does that mean? You know more about what's going on than anyone else. We are here to listen.
"Pain is the body's voice. Listen to your body."
~ Pete Egoscue
Personally, I also believe and agree with Dr. Cabot's statement that, "the ONLY thing that can heal the body is the Power that created it." In the original Weekly Sticky post, the author refers to the chiropractic profession and calls this wisdom Innate Intelligence.
"It is the genius of Life that animates our cells, tissues and organs. It is the coordinating force that maintains our body's intricate chemical balance. It silently and knowingly orchestrates all steps involved in the healing process from mending a broken bone to putting cancer in remission. It is in favor of you living, rather than you dying."
Sure sounds like The 8 Laws of Physical Health and Blue-Print Design and Function. It goes on to say:
"The most important job of a Chiropractor is to teach you about this great force and keep you connected to it. If you want to meet the REAL doctor responsible for healing you, take a look in the mirror. It’s the one staring right back at you."
That's exactly what we believe and do here at Pain Free Posture MN. Just insert Corrective Exercise Specialist where the word chiropractor sits and you have it. My job, in a nutshell. Perfectly described. You can heal. You're not broken. I've seen it thousands of times.
What are you waiting for? Reach out and contact us if you have question. Remember, we're in this together, and I am here to help!
